Rp-process Nucleosynthesis in X-ray Bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
The rapid proton-capture process (rp-process) responsible for energy generation and nucleosynthesis in various astrophysical systems, will be discussed, specifically as it relates to periodic Type I X-ray bursts observed in some accreting neutron star binary systems. The timeline and characteristic dependencies of this bursting behavior will be considered, including a close examination of the nuclear physics inputs and how they are determined, both theoretically and experimentally. Simulations used to compare current models to astrophysical observations will also be discussed, as well as novel observatories and a small selection of observations, some well understood and others unexplained by current theory.

As(p ,γ)se and the Extent of Nucleosynthesis in Type I X-ray Bursts
The extent of nucleosynthesis in models of type I X-ray bursts and the associated impact on the energy released in these explosive events are sensitive to nuclear masses and reaction rates around the Ge waiting point. Using the well known mass of Ge, the recently measured As mass, and largescale shell model calculations, we have determined new thermonuclear rates of the Ge(p,γ)As and As(p,γ)Se ...
متن کاملModels of Type I X-ray Bursts from Gs 1826-24: a Probe of Rp-process Hydrogen Burning
The X-ray burster GS 1826-24 shows extremely regular Type I X-ray bursts whose energetics and recurrence times agree well with thermonuclear ignition models. We present calculations of sequences of burst lightcurves using multizone models which follow the nucleosynthesis (αp and rp-processes) with an extensive nuclear reaction network. The theoretical and observed burst lightcurves show remarka...

متن کاملCarbon Flashes in the Heavy Element Ocean on Accreting Neutron Stars
We show that the burning of a small mass fraction X12 of 12C in a neutron star ocean is thermally unstable at low accumulated masses when the ocean contains heavy ashes from the hydrogen burning rapid proton (rp) process. The key to early unstable ignition is the decreased thermal conductivity of a heavy element ocean. The instability requires accretion rates, Ṁ, in excess of one-tenth the Eddi...
متن کاملNUCLIDES OF ASTROPHYSICS INTEREST WITH MASS NUMBERS CLOSE TO A~80 PNPI participants of the IGISOL/JYFLTRAP collaboration
Nuclei close to the N = Z line in the region near A = 80 play a special role in nuclear astrophysics since the rapid proton (rp) capture process is passing right through them (see Fig. 1). The rp-process, a sequence of rapid proton captures and β-decays, proceeds along the N = Z line up to Ni and it can continue ending in a SnSbTe cycle either in explosive X-ray bursts or in a steady state burn...
